A good night’s sleep is probably the one thing a pregnant woman desires most, yet finds it hardest to obtain! Between the many bathroom trips, heartburn, and getting used to a new sleep position, I found myself sleeping very poorly, especially the further along I get in my pregnancy. Essentia body pillow to the rescue! They offered me the chance to review their memory foam body pillow and I did not hesitate one second before saying yes.
Before I share my personal thoughts, let me tell you a bit about Essentia and the products they offer. If you’re a visual person, check out this youtube video about their natural memory foam mattresses. Their pillow products are similarly made:
The body pillow is great for anyone who is looking for support and comfort, but it is especially fantastic for an expectant mother! Here are some product details:
Here is a photo of my Essentia Body Pillow, with a regular body pillow next to it for comparison. You can see how the Essentia pillow completely wraps around you and is higher, whereas a regular body pillow is flatter, rectangular, shorter, and still requires a pillow for your head.
When I first received the pillow, I was surprised by how large and hefty it is. It truly is a body-sized pillow, and if you’re familiar with memory foam products, you know that they tend to be heavier than traditional pillows. I noticed it had a plastic smell at first, but I assume that is from being stored and shipped in a large protective plastic bag. It went away after a few days, and the cover is removable.
Due to its size, I had my husband put it up on the bed for me. It is long and U-shaped and basically forms a nest that envelops you. My first thought after laying down with the pillow was, “This must be what swaddling feels like for babies”. The pillow is so cozy and after using it for the past 3 weeks or so, I think I’ve given it a good trial and can say it has really improved my sleep!
As you know, pregnant women are pretty much forced to sleep on their side after the first trimester or so. This pillow makes it easy for me to do this. I sleep with my knees bent and one leg under the pillow and one leg on top – elevating my top leg up also helps with all my pregnancy-induced swelling. When I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I switch to the other side.
Before, I was trying to use regular pillows in between my knees and between my chest, but then every time I got up (only about 5 or 6 times a night, ugh!) I had to rebuild my pillow fortress. I like that the Essentia is one large piece. I also have issues with heartburn and acid reflux, and the neck support helps keep my head a bit elevated.
I do see some potential issues with this pillow. It is quite large – we have a king bed and you can see it takes up about half the bed. If you have a small bed like a full, your partner may need to vacate to the couch or another bed. It makes a wonderful “nest” but it also puts up a barrier, and my husband misses being able to snuggle with me. I tried sleeping without it again for one night, but kept waking up on my back (a big no-no for the baby’s safety) and had to go back to the Essentia body pillow.
Although natural foam is breathable, it gets unbearably hot in the summers here in Florida. I also work night shift and sleep during the hottest part of the day. Being cocooned in by this pillow did make me warmer, but I just adjusted and slept with the comforter off. The benefits of sleeping better was worth being a bit warmer.
Lastly, at $489 list price, this pillow is not cheap. Given that we have paid ~$100 each for our Tempur-Pedic single pillows, which are much smaller than the Essentia body pillow, I don’t think the price is unreasonable. I just know that when you are pregnant and have to buy a ton of stuff for the baby too, this may be a luxury item in the budget. I try to look at major purchases from a cost-benefit analysis, and considering that you are pregnant for almost a YEAR of your life, and sleep is pretty important while you are growing a baby, it may be worth it for you!
My Essentia pillow now has a permanent spot on my side of the bed, at least until this pregnancy is over. I must thank Essentia for letting me review this pillow and allowing me to get a much better night’s sleep. I only wish I’d gotten this earlier on!
