Blog Update and Baby News!

in baby, pregnancy

Hi all,

Sorry I have been MIA. Last week I went in for a physical therapy appointment and they noticed my blood pressure was slightly elevated. I consulted with my OB, who sent me to L&D for monitoring just to be safe. I’ve had severe swelling in my legs for a while now but we attributed that to working an RN.

L&D was almost ready to send me home or possibly induce me since I was 38 weeks exactly, but then my bloodwork came back and showed a severe form of pre-eclampsia called HELLP syndrome. There is no known cause for this but the only “cure” is to get the baby out as soon as possible, otherwise seizures may occur. I had a somewhat emergent C-section (of course, since I was preparing for a natural birth…you know what they say about birth plans!). I thank God my physical therapist was concerned and urged me to get it checked out since we had no idea. I never thought I would have my baby later that day.

Fortunately, I had a great medical team and they were very sensitive to the fact that I wanted things as natural as possible. My little man came out screaming and was placed on my chest in the OR, and was able to stay with me the rest of my stay.

We are still adjusting to our new routine and I am recovering from surgery. I will try to tie up loose ends here eventually but I’m sure you can understand that caring for my baby is my priority. Here’s my sweet angel:

Congratulations on your little boy, I’m glad to hear that everything turned out well. He is just so precious and is more important than following the birth plan or having the natural birth you dreamed of.
I can understand if you are disappointed in not being able to have it go the way you wanted. I’m 37 weeks and found out last week my baby is breech, which may interrupt my plans for a natural birth and necessitate a c-section, as well. Hopefully our scheduled ECV tomorrow will successfully flip her.
But I have to say, looking at the photo of your little guy confirms for me that getting the baby here safely is more important than how they actually arrive. I’m so happy to hear that the medical team was sensitive to your idea of birth and gave him to you right away.
Best wishes new mama!

Oh, he is so adorable! Congratulations on a healthy little boy, and that all went well with the birth. I was forced to have a c-section with my last baby.
