Fitness Check-In: Couch to 5k – No Longer a Slave to the Treadmill!

This has been another challenging week in staying motivated, even though my race is less than a month away.  I got on the treadmill twice recently, only to stop after a few minutes – I find it so hard to work out between back to back 12 hour work shifts.  I’m off the rest of the week though, so no excuses!

I was planning to do the treadmill today, but stepped outside with my dog for my 5 minute warm-up walk, so she could at least get some exercise.  The weather was so nice and being a night-shift nurse, I feel like I don’t get to appreciate the sunshine as much as I’d like.  I recently read a running article about taking a break and running just for the fun of it, so that’s what I did today!

I just stayed outside and kept moving, even though I didn’t have a pedometer or watch on me to track the numbers.  I was on a paved path that runs along a fairly busy road outside my neighborhood so I had a vague idea of the distance, but I wasn’t staring at numbers – just enjoyed being outside!  I can’t say what my pace was, but I was gone for about an hour and came back feeling amazing.

I really have to give credit to the Couch to 5k Running Plan.  I have made incredible progress and ran today for much longer on this path than I ever have.  I also learned how to make my dog slooooow down, because her pace is more like Top speed ahead! Woohoo, we’re outside and I’m going nuts – oh wait! I’m veering off to check out this interesting trash!

It made me feel better running outside today too, since it was more multi-tasking – the dog and I both got exercise and fresh air, and because we encountered other people I could reinforce her training.  I feel so refreshed and accomplished, having already gotten my difficult exercise out of the way in the morning. 

Jamaica vacation , I’m ready for you with my swimsuits! 5k race, it may not be pretty, but I’m getting ready for you too :)
