Rachel versus the Treadmill: A Breakthrough

Due to holiday traveling and lack of willpower, I’ve been stuck at Week 4 of the Couch to 5k Running Program for a couple of weeks now.  My husband surprised me by coming home tonight and jumping on the elliptical, so that motivated me to get on the treadmill so we could work out together (I work from 7pm-7 am 3 nights a week, so our time home together is a limited treat!)

I am embarrassingly out of cardiovascular shape, to the point that I couldn’t run longer than 3 minutes in a row at 6mph on the treadmill.  I decided to slow down my pace to 5mph tonight and was able to do it.  Yes, I could probably walk faster than I’m “running” at this pace, but it allows me to complete my workout.  Right now, I’m training for completing the 5k distance, not speed.  For my other 2 jogging workouts this week, I think I will alternate the higher and slower speed and see if I can build up my endurance that way.

It was really nice working out side-by-side with my husband.  Do you have a workout buddy that keeps you motivated?  I know it can make a big difference.

I hope you all are enjoying my New Year, New You giveaways!  I’m going to be posting a bunch more over the next few days.  Don’t forget, the Bondi Band Giveaway ends tonight and the RoadID Laser Engraved ID Band Giveaway ends 1/14 and only has 33 entries!! It’s a really great product that I definitely recommend if you ever work out outdoors by yourself.

I go running on wooded trails at nearby state parks with just my dog, and I feel much better now that I have my RoadID.  You can choose from a wrist band, ankle band, or pouch that Velcros securely to your shoelaces, and you customize the band with your name, emergency contact info, drug allergeries, etc in case you get hurt and are unable to respond.

Keep the momentum going! :)

Unfortunately, I never had a workout buddy when I was at my heyday of workouts (walking almost 2 miles in the morning 5 days a week, strength-training at home) and I think I just lost the gusto. Hoping to gain it back after #2 gets here in April. At least it will be Spring so I hope to wrap her up in the Moby and get back into my walks. :)
